BACKGROUND NOTE

 

Shenzhen-based ZTE traced its origins to 1985 when it was established as Shenzhen Zhongxing Semiconductor by Hou Weigui (Hou). The company was originally a part of a joint venture between the two state-owned enterprises in aerospace in China – China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC) and China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation (CASIC). In March 1993, Zhongxing Semiconductor was renamed Zhongxing New Telecommunications Equipment Co., Ltd (ZTE). Under the leadership of Hou, ZTE focused on crucial technological developments in telecommunications such as CDMA , PHS (Personal Handy-phone Service ), and mobile phones.
